Are you an Artist who’s Questioning Your Entire Career Direction?

I get it - As if a career in the arts wasn’t already insecure enough, now, in a pandemic clouded world, creative careers around the globe have taken a battering. Some are saying the arts sector may not ever recover to be what it was - at least not for the foreseeable future. It’s little wonder so many creatives find the prospect of facing 2022 in a time of such uncertainty and financial stress daunting.

As an artists or creative entrepreneur you are most likely a highly resilient creature… You HAVE to be to get anywhere your field right? Simply attracting an audience invites scrutiny and judgement of your work. Dealing with criticism and rejection is integral to the process you undergo to bring your gifts and vision to the world and to create a career from it – as evidenced by the existence of professional ‘Art critics’. Other than food & wine (which can be considered an art) virtually no other occupation has an entire profession developed specifically to publicly judge it.

You are exposed putting your heart and soul on the line in your work. Your art reflects your inner truths, fears, joys, contradictions and questioning - personal of aspects of yourself, your experience and your view of the world. Of course this vulnerability is what creates the deepest connection with audiences, inspirers, brings appreciation, applause and financial reward, but it takes courage - Lets face it, an arts career is not for the fainthearted.

Despite your innate 'Super-Powers' of resilience and creative adaptability, you are still human, you have limits, you need to live and eat, to pay bills and support families, to try to thrive and grow – to be valued and paid fairly for your unique skills, ideas and talents like everyone else.

For too many artists however, this just isn’t the case right now. The added pandemic induced pressure impacting the arts sector so hard has been a stretch too far. While many have found ways to adapt and survive – or even thrive, there are many more who for one reason or another didn't or couldn't. They have let go of their dreams, their passion and their dedication to purpose in favour of some much needed security and relief from the constant hustle and stress of an unknown future.

My heart goes out to them, but it should not have to come to this – there doesn’t HAVE to be such an unfair choice between perusing your passion and a functional life.

One thing I truly believe, is that there is ALWAYS a way - but when you are exhausted from trying, burned out, battle scarred, broke, afraid for your future and feeling alone in the fight – it’s very hard to see.
